Today computers and internet are dependent on humans for information. But this will change once The Internet Of Things (IOT) enters the field with humans. The IOT is a futuristic technology which states to become a system of interrelated computing devices. It is a network of physical objects embedded with internet connectivity enabling these objects to collect and exchange information.

The name Internet Of Thing is first coined by Peter T. Lewis in a 1985 speech given at US Federal Communication Commission (FCC). He states that ” The Internet Of Things or IOT is the integration of people, process and technology with connectable devices and sensors to enable remote monitoring, status, manipulation and evaluation of trends of such devices:.

 

No IOT without IPv6

The IOT will need more IP addresses to actually provide its benefits but the IPv4 cannot provide that many IP addresses. But this problem is already solved by introducing IPv6 concept in the IOT.

The IPv6 expands the address space to 340 undecillion  (340×1038) and this much address space enables the extension of the internet to everything.

IOT will make possible to detect natural calamities early like detecting earthquake early by distributed control in specific places of tremors. We can also monitor the CO2 emission of factories, pollution emitted by cars and toxics gases generated in farms.Also monitor water level variation in rivers, dams and reservoirs.

Some applications of IOT for smart cities are like monitoring of parking spaces availability, vibration and material conditions in buildings. Intelligent weather adaptive lighting in streets. Intelligent highways with warning messages of unexpected events like traffic jams or accidents.

We can use IOT to identify health problems. 27×7 monitoring of heart rate, pulse, blood pressure is also possible. Information can be sent to the doctor for analysis. Such technology can provide assistance for elderly or disabled people living independently.

Accuracy: The machine-to-machine interaction provides better efficiency, hence accurate results can be obtained fast.

Time: Information gathering is automated so no longer needed to dependent on human for information. This results in saving valuable time.

Information: The IOT technology continuously gathers information for right decision making.

 

Disadvantages

Breach of Privacy: With this technology the breach of privacy increases. All the data must be encrypted so that your personal data does not become common knowledge to everyone.

Loss of Jobs: Advantage of IOT – It could replace humans who are in charge of monitoring and maintaining supplies. It also implies that people will lose jobs.

Over-Reliance on Technology: We all now very much dependent on internet and technology in general. And with increasing popularity of Internet of Things this dependency will also increase tremendously. The more dependent we are on the internet could lead to a potentially catastrophic event if it crashes.
